Why 18/8 Stainless Steel?

Shining Mountain Herbs is pleased to offer a line of herbal products in beautiful, high-quality, custom stainless steel flasks. Only high-grade 18/8 stainless steel is exclusively used in manufacture of our flasks. Besides being unique and attractive, they are environmentally friendly, reusable, 100% recyclable and a healthy alternative to other containers.

group-photo.jpgTo minimize our carbon footprint, we searched for flask manufacturers in the USA. To our surprise, we discovered that no one in the United States currently manufactures stainless steel flasks. Thus, we were led to one of the few locations in the world where they are made: Southeast China. After consulting with our manufacturing experts, we were led to the facility that currently makes our flasks. To assure quality control, we have technical representatives in the manufacturing facility to see that the flasks are manufactured to our specifications in a socially responsible environment. All components of the flasks (including labels and packaging materials) are then independently tested by a certified international laboratory to verify that they meet national and international health safety requirements.

Why Use Our Flasks?

  • They are environmentally friendly and made from food grade 18/8 stainless steel
  • Bisphenol A (BPA) and Phthalate free
  • Eliminate product degradation caused by ultra-violet light that can penetrate glass and plastic containers
  • Meet national and international health standards
  • No inner liners, just 18/8 steel and a clean, fresh taste
  • Reusable (over-and-over again) and can last a lifetime
  • 100% recyclable, thus reducing landfill waste
  • A great substitute to plastic bottles
  • Lightweight, yet strong and durable
  • Outdoor-use friendly -- No more glass bottle or eye dropper breakage
  • The hinged cap design eliminates cap loss
  • Fits nicely into pockets, purses and backpacks
  • The small sized flasks are TSA-approved for air travel

Not All Stainless Steel Flasks Are Equal!

Shining Mountain Herbs flasks are made from strong, high quality, 18/8 food grade stainless steel. Most flasks on the market are made with lower grade metal tops and bottoms even if the body is 18/8 stainless steel. Use of this high quality stainless steel virtually eliminates the release of potential toxins associated with lower-quality corrodible metals. In addition, our solid stainless steel cap is threaded for long life durability.

Our entire cap is 18/8 stainless steel. Flasks that use threaded plastic cap inserts wear out much faster and are prone to being cross threaded and ruined. Plus, our cap has a high-quality, leak proof, BPA/Phthalate free seal. We are confident you will appreciate using our unique, custom flasks!

Why Our Flasks Are Superior

mikey.jpgLower quality metal containers are capable of leaching toxic heavy metals into the container’s contents. If lesser quality alloys and metals (including some types of stainless steel) with less corrosion/leaching resistance than 18/8 or 304 are used, the container may leach a variety of highly toxic heavy metals into the stored content such as lead, antimony, cobalt, etc. Ingestion of these toxic heavy metals can cause severe health issues.

Currently, there are many metal bottles being sold on the market as a healthy substitute for plastic and glass containers. However, please be aware of what that container is made of! Many of these containers meet metal leaching standards only if “water” is stored in them. However, they may not meet leaching standards if you elect to fill them with more acidic liquids such as fruit juices or mixed drinks! We recommend using containers stamped with “18/8 Stainless Steel” or “304 food-grade.”

You Should Know…

It's important to know the quality/grade of the metal container that will be used during food preparation or containment. We recommend only using certified and stamped 18/8 stainless steel also frequently identified as 304 'food grade' stainless steel. Using lesser quality steels in the containment and/or production of food and beverage products can lead to the leaching/corrosion of the inferior metal and potential ingestion of toxic metals.

Types of Stainless Steel and Importance of Knowing

Stainless steel is a mixture of metals specifically designed to provide anti-rusting, anti-staining, plus high corrosion* resistance. For a metal alloy to be called “Stainless Steel” it must contain at least 10.5 percent Chromium and have Iron content greater than 50 percent.   Most people, however, are not aware there are actually more than 150 different types of stainless steel produced for various purposes such as heat resistance, rust resistance, hardness, durability, ductility, corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, etc.

h.jpgThe different grades of stainless steel are denoted using a numbering system. The higher the numbers, the greater the corrosion resistance properties are. National and international health standards agencies, along with metallurgical experts, have determined and specified specific types of stainless steel that meet leaching/corrosion resistance requirements relative to human ingestion. This is extremely important health-wise if ingestible food, beverages, herbal products, etc. are to be produced and/or stored within containers made of stainless steel.

The designation of 18/8 means that the stainless steel contains a minimum of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, thus meeting the requirements of a 304-food grade stainless steel. These two elements are essential in the stabilization of the metal and elimination of undesirable levels of corrosion and leaching of the iron based metal.

Another benefit of 18/8 stainless steel is that the metals, when combined with iron also have exceptional ability to create a non-porous surface that inhibits bacteria growth. It is usually the growth of bacteria on the surface of a vessel that creates the unwanted smell or residual tastes. Besides helping to create a sterile environment, the Chromium and Nickel create a smooth, impenetrable surface that also eliminates substances from penetrating the surface (staining) and makes cleaning 18/8 easy. In addition, 18/8 stainless steel is also a highly preferred metal for storage of food and beverage products because it does not impart its own metallic taste nor retain residual flavors from previously stored products.

These specific qualities are the primary reasons why 18/8 stainless steel is classified as “food grade.” Virtually all high-quality cutlery, pots and pans, commercial kitchen ware, and wine and beer making equipment are made from this type of stainless steel.

* Corrosion is generally defined as the disintegration of an engineered material into its individual elements due to chemical reactions with its surroundings whether gas, liquid or solid.

Care and Use of Flasks

  • Although dishwasher safe, due to the small neck, hand washing is recommended to allow for more thorough cleaning and rinsing.
  • Shake well with a dilute solution of warm soapy water inside. Follow with a thorough rinse using clean, warm water.
  • Drain thoroughly and allow inside of flask to dry with cap off.
  • For more thorough cleaning, hand wash using a dilute vinegar or citric acid solution.
