Shining Mountain Herbs' mission is to promote natural wellness and healing in adults, children and animals through creation of high quality herbal products. We are committed to growing the highest quality herbs in ways that are in harmony with the earth and the plants to insure that the plants grown have the highest concentration of medicinal properties. In addition, our commitment is to promote sustainable growing practices and to cultivating endangered or threatened plants being used in herbal medicine, healing and spiritual ritual. This goal will help the wild stands remain where they belong. We are fully committed to organic, sustainable, high altitude farming, and producing the highest quality medicinal herbs and herbal products. |
About Shining Mountain Herbs
|
 |
Shining Mountain Herbs was founded in 1998 with the vision of sustainably growing medicinal herbs that are endangered, or threatened, in the wild. The vision has grown to include plants that may not be endangered but are needed to supply the growing demand for high quality organic medicinal herbs. We are committed to formulating herbal products such as tinctures, teas, salves, oils and liniments, which will provide optimal health and balance to our clients. Our herbs are hand cultivated, harvested and processed. We harvest our herbs at their peak and use them fresh in our products or ship them fresh overnight in chilled packaging to other herbalists throughout the country. Alternatively some are shade dried for optimal storage and used at a later date. Our herbs are never fumigated, genetically modified or irradiated.
Shining Mountain Herbs is located at the base of the majestic Mount Sneffels Range within the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. We have two distinct growing locations. Our farm is located at 7,000 feet in a valley with rich river-bottom soil. Our other location is more mountainous at 8,500 feet and is covered with pines, firs, oak and aspen with natural springs flowing through the property. The primary cultivation occurs at 7,000 feet, and wild-cultivation occurs at 8,500 feet. The properties are wildlife havens frequently visited by herds of elk and deer, blue heron, fox, coyote, Canadian geese, mountain lions, bear, wild turkey, bald and golden eagles, plus many other species.
About 80 percent of herbs used in our products are grown on our two properties, however, because of our distinct growing climate, we sometimes use organic herbs grown elsewhere or wild crafted with the highest ethical standards.
As indicated above, we are committed to growing the highest quality herbs. As an example, our Echinacea angustifolia fresh root was tested for alkamide content along with fresh Echinacea angustifolia roots from 13 different farms located throughout the United States. The lowest alkamide concentration found in the group was 232 mg/g, the mean alkamide concentration was 1,300 mg/g, while Shining Mountain Herb's Echinacea angustifolia root alkamide concentration was found to be 8,400 mg/g!
While we grow many different types of herbs, our focus is on herbs that thrive at high altitude. As such, we are cultivating and experimenting with new ways to grow high altitude herbs such as Osha (Ligusticum porteri) and Rhodiola rosea.
